A solution I can really live with!
Since begnning to plan my move, the one issue that has given me the most headaches is how to move my computer out to NJ without somehow destroying it en route. I have gone through several iterations of plans to this end, but have never been satisfied with a safe and/or reliable (but not wallet-mauling!) way to transport it. The solution came two days ago while talking to my parents - they offered to buy my computer from me, since my sister will need a computer for college in autumn, anyway. So, all I need to do is set it up for them and take my 120 gig HD with me, leaving them with the original 40 gig drive intact. What a relief! I will be using that money and some of my signing bonus to build a new system for myself, which thanks to the überness of [info]misscheetah has already been ordered and is likely as we speak speeding its way to NJ.

Now, I am not made of money, so it is not exactly top-of-the-line, but it is still a vast, vast improvement over my current system.

NewEgg Wishlist <--- CLICK ME!

It shows just how addicted I am that the first thing I want to do on this rig once it is built is to take WoW for a spin on it.

Notes: yes, I could have gone for a socket 939 athlon64 and gotten a Nforce4 MB and a PCIE vid card, or gotten a SATA HD, but I am on a budget and I wanted to keep the cost as low as I can.

I didn't realize that Newegg did wishlists. Interesting.

If all you want is WoW then just get an Athlon XP 2XXX +++ processor with an a7n8x deluxe mobo.. Get a decent case as well from Antec. There cases keep your comp quite, have awesome filtration you can clean out once a month, and there power supply is one of the best in the bus. Then just corsair 512mb ram. Its a low budget machine. I'd suggest getting a cheap 9200 se if all your going to do is play WoW. The card will cost you likely around $79 once you make it to canada, which I concider to be a bargin. It'll play all your games, of course not at the same performance of a 6800 GT (the best card on the market right now running at $450 last checked).

May I also suggest a Mx 550 Logitech Mouse? It isn't cordless but the thing is awesome for gaming, uber comfortable, $50, loaded with features and buttons.

I'm a giant plug, but i'm giving you some help I think. I know what you mean by not buying into the whole SATA or NForce4 boards or PCI-Express. This will play your games no problem. And when your budget isn't so tight later you can upgrade the card and be awesomely uber!!1

I know I don't respond much but this happens to be the one thing i'm keen in. Please take my response seriously ^_^'''

Thanks for the advice, but that is not really a huge upgrade over my current system.. at the moment I have an AthlonXP 1800+ with 768MB DDR and a Radeon 9600 128mb vid card. It runs WoW just fine, but the extra power would not be a bad thing. One thing I really want a more powerful CPU for is for my 3D rendering work - this new system should vastly improve my render times.

I covet that mouse (in fact I want the Logitech Cordless Duo mouse/keyboard set) but the price is a bit of an impediment.

This MX1000 is the most comfortable mouse I've ever used.

The 9800 isn't THAT big of a jump over the 9600. Did you order it yet? Consider a 6600GT AGP.

I would suggest going 939 but keep your current video card around for awhile and then buy something a bit higher end once you have more monies.

Also, the 256mb 9800 isn't really any better than the 128. The extra memory doesn't help enough to justify the added cost (last I checked, the price difference is pretty significant).

Since you can get 3000+ socket 939, the price of 939 isn't much higher anymore than 754. Make any changes like that and you're set.

I guess you missed the part where I said I am selling my current system to my family. Keeping the card is not an option. Also, it's a 9600SE, esky's old board.

There was pretty little difference between the 256 meg and 128 meg cards, price-wise. I figured I might as well go with the latter.

I looked at several 939 MB + CPU combos, and decided this was just more cost-effective.

And yes, it's already been ordered, so this is all academic anyway.

Your wording bothers me. You say "latter" meaning the smaller card, but also point out that there was little price difference... If that is so, would you not want to go with the former, being twice as awesome for almost the same price?

I merely mixed up which order I listed them in. I did indeed go for the nicer 256mb card. :)

*whew* I was worried that I'd have to shoot you, or something, for a second.
